Mandoline slicers are the best tools for precision cutting and slicing! Even if you have the best knife skills, owning a good mandoline slicer will make you a winner in the kitchen, easily slice your product evenly, and help you to speed things up.

They are great for slicing everything from potatoes for a gratin, to making chips, and for slicing soft fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes or peaches without damaging, bruising or losing the juices. They offer consistency and speed non comparable to other kitchen utensils.

Mandolines are razor sharp and safety is the most important factor when buying one. Blade sharpness and assembly, thickness adjuster, handles, hand protectors, and storage are all important additions to ensure the safety of the tool.

Benriner is our most favourite model and has the best simple design. The blades are sharp, long-lasting, and replaceable. The handheld design and the safe, reliable hand guard keeps your fingers safe and away from the blades.

Although you can’t really go wrong when selecting a mandoline. There are a few factors to consider before choosing the best design for you. Some are handheld and compact while others are larger table top models. Many come with additional blades for different cuts.

Here is an overview of our choices in multiple categories. Scroll down for more details.

Important things to consider before buying

Ease of use

Whether it’s a handheld model or a table top mandoline, the setup must be simple. The instructions must be kept to a minimum and maintenance low.

Swapping blades that offer a variety of cuts should be easy to remove and install without too many manipulations.

Although most mandolines are dishwasher safe nowadays, we still recommend hand washing the blades to avoid cuts.

Sharpness

A mandoline is only made to slice and the blades should be razor sharp. Although we use it frequently in our kitchen, we can’t stress enough to take care when handling this machine as cuts can be severe.

Thickness of cuts

The thickness of the cuts needs to be adjustable. The simplest mandolines have only one thickness which we don’t recommend. The quality and consistency of the cuts should remain the same throughout the use and cuts need to be straight which ensures the food will cook consistently.

Safety and storage

A secure hand guard is essential when using a mandoline. It protects the fingers while gripping the fruits and vegetables during slicing. Opt for the simple ones that come in plastic or rubber and have the best grip.

Check if there is easy storage for the extra blades because you don’t want to lose sharp pieces in your drawers.

Best professional: Benriner Mandoline Slicer

This mandoline slices fruits and vegetables quickly and easily into consistently sized pieces that cook evenly and look great. The handcrafted Japanese stainless steel blades are BPA-free plastic, and the mandoline has a comfortable handle with non-skid rubber base for added stability. It comes with 1 fixed straight blade and 3 interchangeable blades (coarse, medium, fine tooth) to make wide slices, chunky cuts, and extra-fine julienne strips.

The safety guard holds smaller pieces to protect fingers. The turn dial at the back adjusts thickness easily and the machine disassembles for cleaning.

This is a major choice of top chefs and it is also our choice as we have used this model for decades!

Best versatile: Fullstar Vegetable Chopper Dicer Mandoline Slicer

This multi-functional gadget has 11 inserts including chopper blades, spiralizer inserts plus mandoline, julienne and grater functionality.

This set comes with a fingerguard and protective glove to keep you safe whilst you are using the spiral slicer and a blade organizer for when you aren’t. The non-slip base also makes your chopping easier.

With all the functions comes a rather long manual which we encourage you to read before use. Although this is a bulky set, it is a good one for beginners.

Best ceramic: Kyocera Advanced Ceramic Adjustable Mandoline

The ceramic mandoline blades are made from zirconia material produced in Japan for exceptional quality. The ultra-sharp, pure advanced ceramic blades will maintain their edge up to 10x longer than steel blades although many buyers don’t recommend it for “hard” products like potatoes.

This is a “no set up” mandoline that is easy and convenient to use. With only one blade you just need to turn the square dial on the back for one of the 4 desired thicknesses available.

As all other mandolines, it includes handguard protection.

Best Budget: Prepworks by Progressive Adjust-A-Slice Mandoline

This is one of the more popular mandolines. There are 3 thicknesses: thin, medium and thick.

It is rated the sharpest from the non-professional models. The non-skid base and ridges keep this mandoline slicer stable on your cutting surface and allow for use over a bowl. One little drawback might be the difficulty to clean the edge and corners.

Best compact: OXO Good Grips Mini Complete Grate & Slice Set

This set has a slicer, medium grater and coarse grater. The food holder protects hands while slicing and the measuring container collects food and doubles as a lid for storage.

Non-slip feet keep the container steady while in use. To us, this set is good enough if you don’t use it daily and it will slice only soft products perfectly.

Best safety: DASH Safe Slice Mandoline

This is especially designed to keep hands and fingers away from blades and this part works!

This mandoline is versatile with 30 different pre-set cuts for varying thicknesses but the ingredients chute is quite small and doesn’t allow big pieces.

This slicer folds down for easy storage but cleaning is more challenging with lots of angels and corners. There is a 1-year manufacturer warranty.
